Pleasing Forms is a solo project by Todd Thomas, from Pittsburgh, whose music captures the evolution of guitar-laden music, that planted the flower-power seeds of the psychedelic 60s and grew to create a burst of 90s power-pop. It’s music that revives the hazy hues of garage-rock, nestles in the chambers of 90s indie-pop, whilst adding a lo-fi ambience. It’s music that takes all the raw elements of neo-folk and wraps it in a warm blanket of sunshine blues, whilst reaching for the stars. Think The Byrds, The Kinks, The Doors, Syd Barrett, Spaceman 3, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Flaming Lips all having an improvised jamming session in some faraway forest, then you kind of get the idea what Pleasing Forms is about. It’s music that ponders in the shadows, whilst watching the sun rise after a drizzle of morning dew.

Burning a Hole in a Solution is the latest track by the Pleasing Forms that taps into the psyche of classic jangly-pop and revitalise the sun-drenched tones of neo-psychedelia. It’s a laid-back breeze of warm nostalgia, whilst subdued by the singed sentiments. Effortlessly cool, Burning a Hole in a Solution peers from the pensive passage of power-pop, whilst wandering down the back allies of orchestral pop. Like a crestfallen catharsis, Burning a Hole in a Solution smoulders from the ashes of neo-folk, whilst shimmering from the side-lines of alt-blues, in a strummy sequence of shoegaze.

Despite being from Philadelpha, this Todd Thomas solo project does that Triple J / Australiana / Flying Nun dulcet jangle with the best of them, whilst intermittently sliding piercing 80s electric riffs into the mix. The entire album is superb.
